I have been working on a laptop this week which after a while will power itself off. It turns out that once in its lifetime it has belonged to someone who is a heavy smoker. If you smoke in the vicinity of a laptop or PC they can build up a coating of fluff in the cooling fans that will eventually stop them from doing their job. It is advisable to make sure your PC equipment is clean from debris and the fan vents are not obstructed. Here is an example:
Notice the buildup of gunge. It is actually sticky. Here’s what it looks like after a clean:
