We’ve all heard of phishing, and you may know that it is the reason for most data breaches, as much as 70%
Scammers are constantly updating their tactics, and with email scams quite easy to avoid with scepticism, and email scanning antivirus software such as ESET NOD32 Antivirus, scammers are now utilising VOIP technology.
Phone scams are nothing new but the difference between landline and VOIP is that the scammers can either hide behind fake numbers and area codes or appear to be calling from your bank or credit card company, reinforcing their persona. Alternatively they could hack your system and make calls at your expense, or even pose as a member of your company.
Some basic methods to avoid phone scams:
- Do not divulge any sensitive information unless you have called the organisation or are expecting a call from them.
- If they cannot provide satisfactory credentials (companies address, their name, phone number and extension) within 10 seconds, hang up, if they do provide these details, ask if you can call them back.
- Google the details first, and if the first result isn’t them it’s a scam.
The VOIP industry is struggling to deal with this new threat, but ask your provider what they are doing and if they have any training or articles to help.
