How Fast does your IT Support React?

If you ever think about this, you would probably think an “in-house” IT team or a big supplier would give you the best reaction time if you have an issue.

 So is that true? Maybe!

Let me tell you a story about Octagon Technology:

One of our clients had a break-in overnight, and a laptop belonging to a senior member of staff was stolen – they were the first to discover this when they came in early, before everyone else at about 8am. At 8.06am they called me to alert us to a potential security issue. I took the call on a bus in Edinburgh (I was on my way to a seminar about computer security) and immediately passed the details onto one of our team who put into play our incident response plan to deal with these situations. As with chaotic circumstances, things change, and it was discovered that other systems may have been compromised in the break-in – I took the details (on the bus) and passed them onto the team to deal with. The client was informed of the password changes and security steps taken by 8.30am. One of our team then went to the client’s site to help with reconfiguring devices and other support duties – I also assume we will be supplying a new laptop and configuring it again to meet our high security standards.

During the incident, our operations manager had seen the security alerts and had checked in with the team, whilst having his breakfast in a hotel in the Gran Canaria.

Martin and I had a quick call at about 9.15am (Edinburgh to Gran Canaria) to check all was dealt with successfully having reviewed our team’s report.

This is the type of secure service we offer to all of our clients. We understand that they are trusting us to keep them compliant and secure and we work hard to ensure we deliver.

If you want this type of IT support for your organisation I would be happy to meet you and explain how it is simple to implement, easy to operate when needed and you can reassure your clients that you value their information.

Security Conference

This is the event I was attending today in Edinburgh, where we spent some time thinking about the consequences of people who do not understand technology making decisions about technology that affect everyone’s lives.

Clive

Clive is the CIO at Octagon Technology and has special responsibility for Privacy and Security. To understand these issues better he is currently studying on a distant-learners course for a MSc in Advanced Computer Security and Digital Forensics at Napier University.
