iOS 14 – the first 30 minutes

My iPhone updated overnight to iOS 14 and over breakfast I of course had to play with the new features. In the current circumstances the Exposure Notification has got a lot of the headlines but in my first 30 minutes I really like the new widgets.

When I had a look and play with them there were a few hiccups at the start:

  • It took a moment to find where to edit the clock, so it did not show Cupertino time – once you have selected the clock widget and it is still in “jiggle mode” – tap on the clock and now you can select the city you want – I could not pick Lincoln though it had to be London ☹
  • The battery gauge is great and that is when I discovered that the widget can now move from their hidden screen onto the home page. (It has only taken forever for them to catch up with the flexible Android screens – and even then we are only getting the Apple version of user choice.) But the gauge took up a lot of screen space.

Try stacking them

I have a very organised set of screens on my iPhone – which I am sure says a lot about me – but I like the stuff I use regularly to be on that first screen. The new battery gauge takes up room and limits my choice of readily available apps. Then I discovered you can create your own stack of widgets – which are easy to flick through. Problem solved as some of the apps on my first screen have widgets…

So here is my stack:

The cities chosen in my world clock app are significant – check out my blog here for an explanation.

A full review?

No – that is not what we do here – a quick search on YouTube will give you hundreds of reviews. I am going to do that over the weekend to see what I have missed.
