Four fixes for you if you can receive email but cannot send it

Here are a few quick steps to take to solve some of the common problems you may experience with your email. Hopefully this may save you some time before calling for IT support – of course, if you would rather, you can call us (01522 797520) and one of our engineers will always be happy to talk you through the solutions.

Steps to take if you are able to receive emails but are having problems sending:

  • Check the outgoing port number in the advanced settings of your mail account. Many email programs set the outgoing port to the default of 25. Over the years, this port has been heavily used by spammers, so is now blocked by a wide range of mail servers. We ask all of our customers change the outgoing port number to 587. However this does depend if your email provider supports it.
  • If this does not solve the issue, you need to open up the outgoing (SMTP) server settings and check that they are correct with your email provider as some email providers can change their settings and not let you know.

Many email programs (especially Apple devices) will state that the username and password are optional fields for the outgoing server – this is not the case. You will need the username and password fields to send email from your account.

  • Make sure that in the advanced settings, authentication required (password) is also switched on.
  • If the issue continues take note of any error messages and contact a trusted IT support company for help.
