Here is the full story – they started off simple.
50 years of malware? Not really. 50 years of computer worms? That’s a different story… (sans.edu)
The takeaway from this is:
- Update your software
- Use effective defences across your systems – for example anti-virus and anti-malware software, secure Wi-Fi, firewalls, staff training
- Have professional monitoring software installed on your devices
- Watch the news for vulnerabilities
Some of this can be done by yourself but for best practice why not have us install our remote monitoring and management software on your computers to watch out for those vulnerabilities.
Staff training is one of the top defences any organisation can deploy. Tomorrow I am going to be delivering my traditional “onsite” Phishing and Social Engineering training course via Microsoft Teams to a business. It takes about two hours with a coffee break part way through. It includes an open discussion so people can bring their experiences to the table and get useful advice on how to deal with them.
In the good old days we used to run this session at a venue so smaller organisations could benefit from it – we’d supply the coffee. We are now going to run this online – if there is enough demand. The cost will be £20 per person, there is a limit of ten to twelve people on the course. Once we get the numbers we will sort out the date and time – it may even be a weekend if there is demand. Please email Kamila (kamila@octagontech.com) to secure your place. Sorry you have to supply your own tea, coffee and biscuits!
Dealing with things like this is bread and butter to us – enquire about our services here.
Clive
Clive is the CIO at Octagon Technology with special responsibility for data privacy and security. The world of business technology is constantly changing and to meet this challenge he recently graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with an MSc in Advanced Computer Security and Digital Forensics. His dissertation was on data privacy in small businesses using Microsoft 365 for business.
The degree is not the end of the studying – to keep current Clive spends some of his time at work simply reading and studying the latest technology trends and threats so our clients can benefit from this knowledge. This knowledge also shapes and supports the products and services our people deliver to the clients.
To fully use Clive’s new Master’s degree in Computer Security, Clive and Diana have a joint venture with an international research company to get access for our clients to up to date information, schemas, analytics, templates, actionable tools and guidance. Whatever the size of your organisation if you are not approaching IT, security and privacy in a way that supports and benefits you, they can help, from the boardroom to the shop floor.
If you would like to discuss your data protection with Clive, and the policies and procedures that support that, email me at kamila@octagontech.com and I will organise a video meeting for you. He will be happy to answer questions about your particular issues.
