Cyber Security Sharing

Cyber Security and the Importance of Sharing

Information processing is an action that is happening at all times, even now whilst I write and you read this material. The average person receives an impressive amount of information each day. Sometimes new information creates more questions and a need for further research. Sometimes obtaining new information generates an instant need for sharing it with others.

Knowledge sharing is essential in business. When it comes to topics like cyber security and data safety, people often desperately search for information and pay heavily for access to that specialised knowledge.

Knowledge sharing is important because it can:

  • Facilitate the decision-making process
  • Build learning organisations (through a learning routine)
  • Stimulate organisational change
  • Promote innovation and growth
  • Improve customer service

And when it comes to cyber security, knowledge sharing is important because it also helps build responsible organisations. As a business owner you are responsible for data safety and security. You are aware that you need to obey the GDPR regulations, making sure your clients personal information is protected. So, where do you look for help? Do you feel you get the information you pay for? Perhaps you think this service is rather expensive and each time you ask for that professional knowledge you receive a new quote or a larger invoice?

It is true to say that cyber security is a highly specialised area and not everyone can study this subject. It needs someone who is truly passionate about this rather complex topic. So do you think people should charge a premium price for their services in this area? Most definitely they should, but I also believe that they should also feel responsible for their own clients, making sure they are notified about changes and updates as everything that links with technology is ever-evolving. What’s more important cyber security services should be tailored to individual business’s needs because each case is different and requires a different approach and solution.

At Octagon Technology our cyber security services are:

  • Aligned to individual business goals and security objectives
  • Set in accordance with appropriate risk tolerance and threat monitoring
  • Deployed in line with defence strategy
  • Developed around existing policies and organisational structure
  • Inclusive of tracking security metrics and undertaking regular audits

Cyber security is definitely a difficult and highly specialised area and what makes it even more complex is the fact that every business is different and there is no simple solution for all. So when you speak to your cyber security expert next time make sure the solution you’re asking for is tailored to your individual business requirements and aligned closely with your business goals and security objectives, whilst taking into consideration risks, existing policies, procedures, systems and organisational culture. Be sure to ask about the monitoring and evaluating processes too.

At Octagon Technology Clive Catton has a special responsibility for Data Privacy and Security. The world of business technology is constantly changing and to meet this challenge he recently graduated from Edinburgh Napier University with an MSc in Advanced Computer Security and Digital Forensics. His dissertation was on Data Privacy in Small Businesses using Microsoft 365 for Business.

If you would like to discuss this matter with Clive, email me at kamila@octagontech.com and I will organise a video meeting for you.

P.S. The degree is not the end of Clive’s study – to keep up to date with technology and security he takes time at work simply reading and studying the latest technology trends and threats so our clients can benefit from his knowledge. This knowledge also shapes and supports the products and services our people deliver to clients.

To fully use Clive’s degree in Cyber Security we have a joint venture with an international research company to get access for our clients to up to date information, schemas, analytics, templates, actionable tools and guidance.
