Server Down

It’s a Sunday morning. I wake up and there is an email on my phone. It is from our Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) system. One of the servers we look after hasn’t communicated with the system for over 15 minutes.

I get up, have a cup of tea then see if I can connect to the server. I am not overly worried as the backup that is on it is second to none. It gives us the capability to spin up a virtual image of the whole server in the cloud should the hardware be broken. Gone are the days when we have to panic because of dead servers, and the internet connections are constantly getting better.

I could not communicate with the server from my PC so my next plan of action was to see what had happened. On our RMM system, it enabled me to look through the logs and nothing untoward was showing. I got up and dressed then made my way to the location via a popular restaurant for some breakfast.

When I arrived at the server’s location it was switched off. Indicating there had been a power failure. I turned it back on and being the weekend, I decided to run the security updates on it whilst I was there. Unfortunately some of the comms equipment in the basement had failed to switch back on due to its age, leaving only some of the network functioning, I came up with a plan for remote working with the client for Monday as a stop gap. I was able to pick up some new kit from our supplier first thing Monday morning and it was installed by 10:30 am. I went around and ran some tests. All working and correct.

Just thought I would tell you how great our systems are. Shame about the Electricity company though.
