Cloud computing is increasingly growing on its popularity since the Covid-19 pandemic and even more now with the energy crisis! Cloud computing is a better control of your security. Currently the cloud adoption rate in the UK is 88% (Cloud Industry Forum, 2022). What’s more, it is seen by many as one of the ways of cutting costs with IT.
If presently moving to the Cloud is not on your agenda but at the back of your head you know migrating may be necessary mainly due to the growing trend of hybrid working then let me tell you how to do that and how to do it well.
The benefits of cloud computing (in the nutshell)
- Security – your data is constantly being backed up
- Maintenance – the maintenance of the server storing your data is the responsibility of your cloud provider not yours
- Flexibility of working – everyone can work from (nearly) anywhere
- Flexibility of infrastructure – as you grow, you can expand your plan with the vendor, rather than you buying new equipment
How would I know if now is the right time to move to the Cloud?
Ask yourself the following question:
Is it going to be a cost-effective solution for my business in its current growth stage?
When searching for the answer remembering that the Cloud will bring you flexibility with the cost plan and the way you work.
A common misconception amongst the business owners is that businesses can have a better control of their security if they keep things on site.
Statistics:
- Most of the biggest data breaches exploit traditional computers not data stored in the Cloud (The National Academy of Science, 2022)
BUT…
If you still have any doubts, try a multiple-layer security approach:
- Encrypt your data before loading it into the cloud and encrypt the information
- When the data is retrieved and have a tracking system in place to know if a file has changed since it was uploaded
- Use a hard to guess password for your encrypted data
- You can use MFA along with you strong password
- Pick up a provider that best suits your security requirements
