Problems with passwords

There are many problems with passwords and the world without passwords would be more secure, at least accordingly to FIDO. Let’s talk about some of the problems with passwords and see if passwordless business would be more secure.

Key problems with passwords

Almost all of you will currently be using far too few passwords, most of which are weak. Why? Because passwords always get in the way and slow you down (you mistype it, forget it, there are too many or they are too complex). Am I right?

Further to that, even if you think your password is strong, there are still many ways of stealing your passwords anyway. For example,

  • you’re using the same password for different accounts
  • your password is easy to guess
  • you received a convincing email and clicked on a link
  • somehow you got tricked and gave your private information away.

Passwords – a good idea?

Passwords as an idea aren’t particularly good because they are conflicting in nature I would say:

1) can be hard to crack but difficult to remember or

2) can be easy to remember and also easy to crack.

Almost everything we do online today require an account and typically every account requires a password. Correct?

Statistically an average person has from 5 to 30 accounts actively used at any given time (i.e., online banking, social media, supermarkets, charities, gaming, gambling and accounts used for individual apps etc). It’s not a surprise people have problems with passwords and struggle to remember them.

Too many and too complex passwords, too hard to remember.

So, I’m not surprised people just make it easier for themselves and use a nice, easy and short password and use it everywhere for everything.

There are problems with passwords, and this is why they will become less important in the future. According to Fast ID Online Alliance (FIDO) the world without passwords is more secure.
