Updates are there to fix bugs! Software updates increase performance and improve security. They may disrupt the use of the device but even, so they are generally recommended.
Why else firmware updates are important?
What some may not know about their device is that there is code built into the chips. Unfortunately, these chips can be just as much of a problem as any software and sometimes need updating.
Do you know what happens if you don’t allow the firmware updates?
A friend of mine has a router providing Wi-Fi to his house, which most of the time works perfectly. It does, however, have a significant security flaw, which without a firmware update is unfixable.
The bug causes the router to forget the specified details for his Wi-Fi network, which is to say the name and the password. And instead defaults to the settings it initially came with. It is never a good idea to use the default settings. Same as, it is a good idea to reuse any password. You might think it’s just factory resetting but the bug applies only to 2.4ghz Wi-Fi as no other settings are changed.
Clearly this is not ideal! Clearly software updates are essential! Security is not guaranteed when you aren’t in control of your own settings and passwords. This left my friend at the mercy of the provider to fix the problem.
To conclude, firmware and BIOS updates are critical to the device! Improper installation could permanently disable the device, so maximum care should be taken when updating.
