Open your Teams meeting to attendees outside your organisation

Of interest to members of organisations that use Microsoft 365 for Business

The default setting in Teams is to hold anyone from outside your organisation in the “lobby” when they join your meeting – and it then requires someone to let them in. This option was set as default to put a barrier up for “meeting bombing”. This is of particular importance if video meetings are being used with young people, for school lessons, or there are safe-guarding, security or privacy issues (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-52240251).

This default action can be changed in the meeting options.

How to:

1. Set up your meeting in Teams or through Outlook. (see note below)

2. From Teams open the meeting you want to give access to

3. Click on Meeting options – this takes you to a web page where you can make changes to the meeting access.

4. From the drop-down menu “Who can bypass the lobby?” (see image below) choose Everyone.

5. Save

6. Close the web page and return to Teams

This setting can also be changed by the toggle switch below (but I have not tested this!) – set it to Yes

This functionality can be restricted by your system administrator, so if it not working check with them to see if it can be allowed for your organisation.
